Words with Pictures
Letters and words are used to send visual messages.
Think about viewing pictures and posters in previous lessons.
- How words are arranged on a page can send important messages to the viewer.
- In the KID Power poster, words in large letters were most important to the message the designer wanted you to know.
When you watched the video about graphic design, you learned that placement of words on the page was a very important part of the design and message to the viewer.
Word Art
Word art involves the arrangement of letters either within one word or with many words to make a particular shape.
In the globe on the right, words are arranged horizontally and vertically, in large and small print and in bold and regular font.
Consider how you might arrange letters in a word to make its meaning more effective.
Here are just a few suggestions that you can do:

- Make the first letter bigger and fancier than others in a word.
- Have the letters of the word make a shape.
- Make symbols for the letters.
- Add pictures around the letters.
- If you are working in a Microsoft Word document, click INSERT (next to βFileβ and βHomeβ), then WordArt (to the right at the top of the page) to select thickness, shading, colour, outline, etc. of letters for a creative result!
