Poems to Explore

Literacy in Action 4A has three shape poems for you to study:


  • Page 92: To Each His Own
  • Page 94: Giraffe
  • Page 95: Apple

Have a look at these pages. Look at the layout of these poems.

Notice the layout (arrangement of colours, words, pictures) of the poems on these pages.


In To Each His Own, you see the words on one side of the page arranged to look like leaves falling. On the other side of the page you see leaves on a quilt.
In Giraffe, the words form the shape of a giraffe’s head, neck, body, tail, and legs.
In Apple, the words in white suggest the inside of the fruit. They are framed in a circular peel formed by repetition of the word β€œred” and the title β€œApple” takes the shape of a green stem.

Read each poem, paying close attention to the words in each poem. Each author uses a variety of different kinds of descriptive sensory words to explain the message.

Save

How to save a file for submission:


  1. Have the file open and select Save As from the File menu.
  2. Select your Documents folder as the location to Save In.
  3. Name the document. You will always name your documents in a similar way.
      • Use the first letter of your first name, followed by your last name, then an underscore (_), then the name of the file.
      • In this case, the file name is Reader's Notebook: Shape Poetry. For example, if my name is John Smith, I would name my file smith_shapepoetry.

  4. Click Save. Your chart is in your Documents folder.
