Unit 3

Survivors!

Lesson 1

Hopping to the Rescue

Scan Hopping to the Rescue on pages 118 to 121 of Literacy in Action 4A.

After taking a look, you probably have some questions about this reading, such as the ones listed below:

  • Who is Gabrielle Felio?
  • Where is Petrie Island?
  • What is the ACC?
  • What awards did Gabrielle win?
  • Why did she win them?

Asking questions like these before you read will help you notice and understand important information when you begin reading.
This reading strategy is called ask questions, pause and check, summarize.

Before you start to read, write down your questions about this selection, then go to the story.
Now, read page 119.

Pause and check: Were any of your questions answered?
Write down any other questions you may have.

Read pages 120 to 121.

Pause and check: Were the rest of your questions answered? Did you learn anything that was not in your questions?
The final step in this reading strategy is to summarize, which means to recount what you read in a short form (in words, a chart, a web, etc.).

Here Is How One Student Summarized Gabrielle's Work

"Gabrielle Felio, a girl from Ontario, started a club called the Amphibian Conservation Club (ACC). They saved 145 frogs and other animals by taking them to another pond before their habitat was destroyed by people building a parking lot. Gabrielle has won many awards for the work her club has done."

You will use this reading strategy in Unit 3.
