Crack the Code

Read Crack the Code on page 123 in Literacy in Action 4A.

Words in science can sometimes be difficult to understand.
A good way to think about what these words mean is to look for what you know in the word.
Read and think about the following examples:

In the words scientist and naturalist, I see ist. I know that ist at the end of a word means doing for a living what the first part of the word says. Thus, a scientist works in an area of science, and a naturalist works with nature.

In the word conservation, I see something almost exactly like conserve. The ending ation means doing whatever the first part of the word means. So, conservation is about conserving things, like activation means making something active and intimidation means making something intimidating.

In the word endangered, I see danger. The prefix en turns a noun into a verb (like enclose, entwine, enforce) and that helps me with this big word – it means to make something dangerous.
