Parts of a News Article

Click on each tab below to learn about the different parts of a news article.

Click each coloured row for information about the assignment.

Your first step is to create a main headline, which tells the reader what topic to expect.

A sample news article about someone who collects Jellybeans demonstrates each part. For example, a jellybean collector might use a headline such as "Jellybeans Galore".

The next step is the lead sentence.

It is the first sentence in the article and is used to grab the reader's attention. There are different types of lead sentences that you will practise on the next page. For the example, it could be something like, "Hundreds of jellybean jars line the bookshelf of world record jellybean collector".

The next step is the important details.

These include 5 Ws, details, and pictures of your hobby.

The last section is the closing in which the author leaves the reader thinking about some detail that will help him or her remember the story.

It could be a sentence such as, "How will I ever find more, you ask? You will just have to keep reading to find out".
