Unit 4

What do kids like to do?

Lesson 8

Reader's Notebook

What do Canadian kids like to do?

In this selection on pages 32 to 36 in Literacy in Action 4B, Canadian kids were asked what they liked to do in their spare time. Their responses were presented in easily understood graph form.

Skim information on the pages and in graphs.

Notice how information is arranged in a graph. The title of the graph indicates the question asked. The bottom indicates student choices regarding what they like to do. The number of students who enjoyed the activity is recorded on the left-hand side of the graph.

The question at the top of page 32 asks, “How do the graphs make the information quick and easy to understand?” Answer this and other questions on the Reader's Notebook: What do Canadian kids like to do? worksheet.

As you read information in the graphs, think about the following questions:

  • What kinds of activities seem to appear most often?
  • What conclusions could you draw about the class from these charts?
  • What do they like to do the most?

Answer five questions in During Reading on the Reader's Notebook worksheet with information in the graph.

What do you notice about the difference between what the girls and boys like to do? Write your response on the Reader's Notebook page.

The graphs on pages 35 and 36 focus on different kinds of questions. Students were asked how often they enjoyed doing hobbies or lessons, and how often they participated in organized groups. Which group (boys or girls) enjoyed doing this most? Why do you think that is? Write your responses on the Reader's Notebook worksheet.
