Inferences and Predictions
There are some "rules" about making inferences. Each time you make an inference, ask yourself the following questions:
- What did the writer tell me directly?
- What other information do I have (from reading between the lines)?
- What evidence do I have to support my inference?
Evidence to support an inference means:
What happened in the story that proves my inference is correct?
For example, in Awful Ogre Takes His Supper, the evidence is:
This evidence tells us that our inference – "Ogre is really huge" – is correct.
What happened in the story that proves my inference is correct?
For example, in Awful Ogre Takes His Supper, the evidence is:
- Ogre "Steps out", "Forty miles away".
- "They empty every pot and rush me triple portions"
- "My appearance and demeanor seem to give me extra clout"
This evidence tells us that our inference – "Ogre is really huge" – is correct.
