Unit 5

Make me laugh!

Read

Read Like A Writer

Read page 77 in Literacy in Action 4B to learn some techniques authors use to write a story.

A person's point of view is how he or she looks at things.

Remember that you learned that different things are funny to different people. Your point of view – whether you are watching something happen, or it's happening to you – can change whether or not you think it's funny.

Sometimes, stories that readers find funny aren't funny to the people in the story. Think about the ogre – he didn't understand why the people in the restaurant acted as they did, and didn't really know what was going on. If he did know what was going on, do you think he would have thought it was as funny as readers did?

Sometimes the events of a story are funny to one character and not to another. It often depends on the writer's point of view. You're going to write sentences for a Storyboard to practise how point of view affects humour.

Authors also use special techniques to make a story funny:

  • silly pictures
  • funny language
  • puns
  • funny names
  • silly situations
  • foolish behaviour
  • a character in the "wrong place"
  • surprise ending
  • unlikely situations,
  • etc.

You have read stories in this unit using these techniques. Now, you can add point of view to the list.
