Check out the photos on page 90 in Literacy in Action 4B. (The person she is copying is a famous comedian named George Carlin.)
Read page 90 in Literacy in Action 4B.
You have learned the name of the author and a little about the selection. Make some predictions about the rest of the selection.
An interesting question is asked in the green textbox near the top of page 91: "How does Samara use different words for "funny" to keep the article interesting?" Keep this question in mind as you read this page.
Now reread the page replacing all the different words that mean funny with the word "funny".
It would read something like this:
I perform with Kids 'n Comedy. We're a group of funny kids. We take classes from real comedians on how to be funny… we get the audience laughing out loud when we perform our funny routines… my dad and I like to be funny. He'll start being funny and I'll finish it… before I'm writing all my own funny stuff!"
- Do you see how important word choice is? The selection would become boring if she just used the word "funny" over and over.
- Keep the same question about different words for funny in mind as you read page 92 in Literacy in Action 4B.
- Answer these questions about the selection on the Reader's Notebook: Jokin' Around worksheet, then place the file in your Documents folder.
- Read the jokes from pages 93 to 95 in Literacy in Action 4B.
