Reading In Social Studies Assignments
Building Vocabulary
After you have had time to review the Kiddle Website with information about Banff National Park go back to look for unfamiliar words. Sometimes, when you read Social Studies or Science information, you encounter many unfamiliar words.
Go back and look through the sections for any unfamiliar words that you see. Sometimes they are bigger words like national or beautiful, and sometimes they may be smaller words like fuss or area.
Online dictionaries have many different informational features, just like the book style dictionary shown here.
Online dictionaries provide information about how you pronounce a word. You may also be able to have the computer speak the pronunciation of the word by clicking on the speech symbol. They also tell you the part of speech it is, (Verb, Noun, Adjective) in this case, the word dictionary is a noun as indicated by the lower case "n". They also provide the definition or definitions, if there is more than one. Often there is a picture example, and on the bottom, synonyms (words that mean the same) and antonyms (words that mean the opposite), and similar words.
Websites
You can use your dictionary to locate new or unfamiliar words. Wordsmyth is a good online dictionary that you could use.
