Maiden Of The Mist

Turn to page 162 in your Literacy in Action 4B book. Look at the picture and the title.

You have read about the natural beauty of Niagara Falls on page 141. Remember that the Niagara Falls is 52 metres high and has some of the fastest flowing rapids.

The question for this story is Why do people tell legends?

  • Legends are stories passed down over the years, often over generations.
  • Cultures and races have their own legends: some are similar; others reflect their own beliefs.
  • Legends are usually first told orally.
  • Legends often explain events and things in nature.

As you read this story, respond to questions on the Reader's Notebook: Maiden of the Mist worksheet.

In this story, a young Seneca (First Nations) girl of long ago searches to find a way to help her people.

Her story has been passed down as a legend telling about the creation of Niagara Falls.

Look at the illustration on page 162 again and read page 163 in Literacy in Action 4B to find out what she is doing.

Respond to the following questions on the Reader's Notebook: Maiden of the Mist page:

  • Where is the young girl going in her canoe and why?
  • What word would you use to describe her actions?

Look at the illustrations on pages 164 and 165 in Literacy in Action to see what is happening to Lelawala. Read page 165. Respond to these questions on the page:

  • What words in the story describe how Lelawala felt as she was tossed around?
  • What did Lelawala learn at the end of her tumble through the falls?
  • What was her problem now?

Look at the illustrations in the rest of the story. What do they tell you about what happens next? Read pages 166 to 169 in Literacy in Action to find out. Answer the following questions on the page:

  • How did Lelawala help her father?
  • What did the monster have to do with the formation of Niagara Falls?
