Grade Four Language Arts


General Outcomes


In this course you will continue to develop all of your Language Arts skills. These are the outcomes for Grade 4 Language Arts:

Students will listen, speak, read, write, view, and represent to explore thoughts, ideas, feelings, and experiences.


Discover and Explore

  • compare new ideas with prior knowledge
  • discuss and compare development of topics in different forms
  • choose appropriate forms
  • assess progress (self-evaluation)
Clarify and Expand

  • identify perceptions
  • record and reflect on ideas through notes, reflective paragraphs, lists, etc.

Students will listen, speak, read, write, view, and represent to comprehend and respond personally and critically to oral, print, and other media texts.


Use Strategies and Clues

  • use prior knowledge, organizational structure, visual clues, etc. to assist comprehension
  • extend sight vocabulary
  • monitor understanding through use of predictions, text features, structural elements, etc.
  • use phonics and structural analysis to read new words

Understand Forms, Elements, and Techniques

  • describe and compare characters, connections among events, importance of setting, etc.
  • learn visual ways of recording and presenting
  • identify techniques used to affect readers’ perceptions
Respond to Texts

  • experience large variety of genres and forms (discuss, evaluate, connect to self, main ideas, cause and effect)
  • appreciate language (word choice, repetition, alliteration, rhyme, etc.) working together to enhance effect and convey meaning

Create Original Text

  • generate ideas, develop visuals
  • produce work with logical sequence, character development, personal responses

Plan and Focus

  • use patterns of texts to understand, focus, ask, and respond to questions
  • plan for gathering ideas and information, evaluate sources

Organize, Record, Evaluate

  • organize information, record (make notes), evaluate research
Select and Process

  • identify and use a variety of means to access information and research questions, evaluate sources

Share and Review

  • communicate ideas and research in a variety of ways and genres, edit and revise own work
  • appraise own and others’ work

Students will listen, speak, read, write, view, and represent to enhance the clarity and artistry of communication.


Enhance and Improve

  • write and use word processor and its features, expand knowledge of language, enhance artistry

Present and Share

  • present in organized form to peers, use props to enhance message, manage volume and tone of voice for effect
  • give feedback to others
Use Conventions

  • use capitalization, commas, and quotations accurately

Students will listen, speak, read, write, view, and represent to respect, support, and collaborate with others.


Respect Others and Strengthen Community
