Mathematics 31

Introduction

Special Learning Activities:
Applets, Skill Builders, Videos

Applets
Throughout the course, you will find applets. An applet is an interactive tool that allows you to explore and visualize a concept to help deepen your understanding.

Skill Builder
Links to pages containing previously-learned curriculum have been placed throughout the course to help activate your prior knowledge. These pages assist students who need a refresher on the concepts covered in previous Math courses. These pages include notes, examples, and some videos.

Videos
This course includes many videos produced by a third party. Although these videos are good, the narrator occasionally uses casual terminology. In an introductory calculus course, it is important to focus on the correct terminology because precise language becomes increasingly crucial in advanced math. You need to know the proper vocabulary. The terminology used in the notes section of the course is what students are expected to use.

In some videos, a calculator is used. Remember your assignments, quizzes, and exams will not require the use of a calculator.

Loading the videos may take a few moments. Please be patient!

Multimedia Resources
All applets, skill builders, and videos can be accessed through the Multimedia Resources page at the end of course introduction.

Glossary
Important vocabulary terms explored in the Lessons are highlighted in blue. Click on these words to see their definitions.

Practice Questions
Practice questions are located throughout the lessons. Students are encouraged to work through these questions to get a better understanding of the concepts presented in the lesson. Students are encouraged to complete the questions before checking the answers. Practice questions can be downloaded so that students can take the time needed to thoroughly work though the problems.

Each practice page is set up with tabs as follows.

Click the Solutions tab to access the full detailed solutions online.

Assignments
All assignment booklets are in PDF format. The assignment booklets must be downloaded, printed, and scanned and uploaded for marking when complete.

Practice Quiz
A practice quiz is included with each unit. There are no marks awarded for completing the practice quiz. The practice quiz is set up to model an actual quiz. The time limit is the same as for a unit quiz. Once the practice quiz has been completed, full solutions will be provided for each question. Students are encouraged to write the practice quiz to ensure they have mastered the concepts in the lessons before attempting the unit quiz. It is in your best interest to complete the practice quiz without the aid of a calculator.

Quiz
Each unit contains one timed quiz that is graded for marks. There will be only one attempt allowed for each quiz. Students are responsible for scanning their solutions to the short answer questions, and then uploading them to the quiz in Moodle. If you are unsure of how to do this, please contact your teacher before starting the first quiz.
