Stretches

A stretch is just as it sounds. The shape of the graph changes, but the orientation of the graph and the basic position do not.

In the case of a vertical stretch, the «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»y«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-values change by a common factor. If «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»y«/mi»«mo»=«/mo»«mi»f«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math» is the equation of the original function, then «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»y«/mi»«mo»=«/mo»«mi»a«/mi»«mi»f«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math» is the equation of the function after a vertical stretch. All the «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»y«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-values are multiplied by the factor «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mfenced open=¨|¨ close=¨|¨»«mi»a«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mstyle»«/math».

A horizontal stretch affects the «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»x«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-values of the original function. If «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»y«/mi»«mo»=«/mo»«mi»f«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math» is the equation of the original function, then «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»y«/mi»«mo»=«/mo»«mi»f«/mi»«mfenced»«mrow»«mi»b«/mi»«mi»x«/mi»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math» is the equation of the function after a horizontal stretch. The «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»x«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-values are all multiplied by the factor «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mfrac»«mn»1«/mn»«mfenced open=¨|¨ close=¨|¨»«mi»b«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mfrac»«/mstyle»«/math».

Given the function «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»f«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«mo»=«/mo»«msup»«mi»x«/mi»«mn»2«/mn»«/msup»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math»,

i.
sketch the graph of the transformed function «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»g«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math», for each case below,
ii.
describe the transformation involved in each case,
iii.
state any invariant points, and
iv.
state the domain and range of each transformed function.

b.
«math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»g«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«mo»=«/mo»«mfenced»«mfrac»«mn»1«/mn»«mn»3«/mn»«/mfrac»«/mfenced»«mi»f«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math»

«math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»g«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«mo»=«/mo»«mi»f«/mi»«mfenced»«mrow»«mfrac»«mn»1«/mn»«mn»3«/mn»«/mfrac»«mi»x«/mi»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math»

ii.
In the transformed graph, «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»g«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math», the «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»y«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-values have been multiplied by a factor of «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mn»4«/mn»«/mstyle»«/math». This means each point on the graph of «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»g«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math» is «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mn»4«/mn»«/mstyle»«/math» times as far from the «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»x«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-axis as the corresponding point on «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»f«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mstyle»«/math». This gives the appearance of the graph being “taller”.
Note: It is tempting to think of «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»g«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math» as being “narrower” than «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»f«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mstyle»«/math». However, because we are interpreting the stretch as vertical, it is best to imagine individual points moving upwards instead of inwards.
iii.
The point «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mfenced»«mrow»«mn»0«/mn»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mn»0«/mn»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«/mstyle»«/math» is invariant.
iv.
The domain is the same for both functions.

«math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mfenced open=¨{¨ close=¨}¨»«mrow»«mi»x«/mi»«mo»§#8739;«/mo»«mi»x«/mi»«mo»§#8712;«/mo»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»R«/mi»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«/mstyle»«/math»

The range is the same for both functions.

«math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mfenced open=¨{¨ close=¨}¨»«mrow»«mi»y«/mi»«mo»§#8739;«/mo»«mi»y«/mi»«mo»§#8805;«/mo»«mn»0«/mn»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mi»y«/mi»«mo»§#8712;«/mo»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»R«/mi»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«/mstyle»«/math»

This means each point on the graph of «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»g«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math» is «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mfrac»«mn»1«/mn»«mn»3«/mn»«/mfrac»«/mstyle»«/math» as far from the «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»x«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-axis as the corresponding point on «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»f«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mstyle»«/math». This gives the appearance of the graph being “shorter”.
iii.
The point «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mfenced»«mrow»«mn»0«/mn»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mn»0«/mn»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«/mstyle»«/math» is invariant.
