Extra Help

  1. Choose one group of frames from your chosen graphic novel. These images are significant to key elements and themes in the graphic novel.

  2. Read Tracing Key Visual Components tutorial.

    • Reproduce your frames and explain the significance of various elements in the images you traced by making notes over and around the frames.

    • Photocopy, cut out, and arrange images physically on a page. Annotate your image with your observations and either scan or photograph the finished product for submission to the dropbox.

    • The original image does not need to be submitted to the dropbox, but the image you chose should be indicated clearly on the page.

    • Answer your questions on your annotated image, using a different colour. Call your teacher if you need help with this!

  3. Analyze elements in your chosen graphic novel to discover theme and how it relates to the world around us.

    • Complete a "What? So What? Now What?" chart.

    • In the "So What?" section, summarize in a paragraph information you discovered in the image to answer these three questions:

      1. How do you relate to ideas in this image? Identify other texts in which you saw similar ideas and explain the similarity.

      2. How are the author's ideas demonstrated in the world today?

      3. Which visual element was particularly effective in your images? Explain how this element was effective in contributing to the theme.

    • In the "Now What?" section, identify in a paragraph two graphic novels you might be interested in reading. Give a brief summary of each and state whether their theme is similar to that in your chosen graphic novel.

      • Write your paragraph and post it on the online discussion board under 5.3 Graphic Novels. If posting on the discussion board, contact your marker immediately with this information.
