Slang:
- are words that are used informally by a particular group of people
- refers to popular new ways to express ideas and feelings
Slang can be used by groups of people to set them apart. It certainly can be used to express ideas and feelings in a different way. It might even be used to keep messages from other groups of people. Slang words are not found in a dictionary. Slang words are used in informal situations. When you are writing or speaking in formal situations, slang should be avoided.
Sometimes slang words allow people to say things that cannot be said by using traditional words. These new words and expressions may join regular language if a lot of other groups of people start to use them and they become popular. Many words that we use every day and can find in the dictionary began as slang.
If the slang words are not accepted by most people, slang expressions become quickly outdated. Then they are replaced by new slang.
