Lesson 3 — Activity 1: What Are Parts of Speech?

When you are speaking informally with friends or family, you might not pay much attention to the language you use. There are times, however, when you need to be sure that you are using language correctly. You want your message to be clear and easy to understand.

You might be asked to write a letter or a report or to give a speech or presentation. It is important in those situations to choose your words carefully and correctly. If you know what kind of words you are using, it makes your job much easier.

The parts of speech are the types of words used for different purposes in communication.

Each word in a sentence does a different job. If you know what job the different words in a sentence are doing, it will be easy for you to tell what part of speech each word is.

The same word might be able to do a different job in a different sentence. So you need to think about how each word in a sentence is being used to understand which part of speech it is.
