Lesson 4 — Activity 3: Using Prepositions

The dog is lying on the couch. The word "on" is a preposition.
Another part of speech that you can use to make your communication more clear and more interesting is the preposition.

A preposition is:
  • a word that shows a connection between a noun or pronoun and some other word
  • the purpose of a preposition is usually to show where something is or when something happened

Here are some examples of prepositions in different sentences:
  • The dog is lying under the table.
  • The dog is sitting on the couch.
  • The dog is walking beside her owner.
  • The dog is jumping over the fence.

Each of the underlined words describes the location of one of the nouns (in these examples, the dog) in the sentence.

Think about how these sentences would sound without the prepositions:
  • The dog is lying.
  • The dog is sitting.
  • The dog is walking.
  • The dog is jumping.

The basic information is the same, but using prepositions allows you to have more variety and details in your sentences. Using prepositions allows your writing or speaking to be more colourful, interesting, and informative to your reader or listener.
