Lesson 18 — Activity 2:
Revising
and Editing
As you know, the rough draft of an essay is not the final product. So what comes after the rough draft to transform your writing into a masterpiece?
When you have received feedback on your rough draft, the first step is revision.
When you have received feedback on your rough draft, the first step is revision.
As the word suggests, revision means you take another look at your writing. Read through the suggestions you received from your teacher and ask yourself some questions:
- Does the rough draft make sense?
- Is there information that is missing or incomplete?
- Are there ideas that need more details to be clear to the reader?
- Are all of the paragraphs focused on the main point of the essay?
- Does the essay flow smoothly from one point to the next? Do you use transition words and phrases effectively?

After you have done revising, the next step is editing.
You may have heard of editors of newspapers or magazines: in this step, you are doing what editors do.
You are going to look at the details of your writing
and see if there are aspects that need to be corrected:
- Do all of your sentences express a complete idea?
- Do all of your paragraphs have an introduction, details that support your main idea, and a conclusion?
- Have you spelled everything correctly?
- Are there errors in punctuation that need to be corrected?
- Are there choices you can make in terms of the different words you have used that would make your writing more interesting?
