Lesson 32 β€” Activity 1: Previewing the Novel


When you were deciding which novel study theme to complete, you probably spent quite a bit of time thinking about and looking at the information regarding the novels that was presented.

Now that you have selected a novel to read, take a close look at the book once again and review the novel’s features. This will help you become more familiar with certain aspects of it before you begin reading.
There are many parts of a novel to preview before reading.

Most novels contain the following:

 
Front Cover:
  • includes the title of the story and the author’s name; may include an image that represents the story

Dedication:
  • a short message from the author dedicating the book to someone or something; dedications appear on a separate page at the beginning of the book

Acknowledgements:
  • page on which the author thanks people who provided assistance or support in the writing experience, such as the publisher, editor, sources, illustrators, and family members

Prologue:
  • an introduction that provides details about past events or about characters in the novel

Special Features:
  • illustrations, pictures, glossaries, maps, timelines, or family trees at the beginning, end, or placed throughout the novel
  • a summary of what the book will be about or an excerpt (sample page) from the book
  • information about the author
