Livestock Management

Poor livestock management can result in accidents, injuries, and deaths.

There are several controls we can implement to reduce the risks associated with livestock management:

  • First! Study animal behaviour. This will improve your ability to anticipate and manage potential risks.
  • Learn to ride. The better trained the rider, and the better trained the horse, the stronger and more effective the working relationship.
  • Be patient when working with livestock.
  • Use correct livestock handling techniques.
  • Be quiet. Loud noises tend to spook animals.
  • Ensure all gates are in good working condition, and kept securely closed.
  • Avoid working with animals in confined spaces (e.g., chutes).
  • Give animals lots of space when herding them. When available, use support animals (e.g., dogs) to help. This increases the space between you and the livestock.
  • Avoid slippery work areas. These are potentially hazardous to both man and beast.
