Another place people shop for food is in the basements of major department stores like Mitsukoshi, Tobu, Isetan and Seibu. This area of the department store is known as DEPACHIKA.
The fruits, vegetables, meats and seafood sold in department stores are top of the line.
Like grocery stores, the department stores also have many types of stalls and stores that sell groceries and cooked foods. The difference is that each stall or seller is its own store so you can't ask for some meat from the meat counter and then pay somewhere else with your vegetables. You pay at the meat counter and then continue on with your purchases.
They are a fascinating place to visit and you will definitely find some delicious food to eat (whether by sampling or purchasing)! If you go later in the evening, there will be many discounted prices on food, too!
