Unit 6 Test

Chopstick etiquette is very important to know.
Chopsticks (おはし)have an important place in Japanese funeral rituals. Things that happen with chopsticks in funerals should never occur in everyday eating. Chopsticks are put upright in bowls of rice as offerings to the deceased so when you are eating, never stick your chopsticks upright in food.
Also, at Japanese funerals, after the body is cremated, the bones are passed from family member to family member by chopsticks before putting them in an urn. This is why you should never pass food to someone with chopsticks. This is a very serious no-no.
Here are some other rules (not related to death):
1. do not spear your food with your chopsticks
2. do not try to cut food with one chopstick in each hand
3. do not point with your chopsticks
4. if you're taking food from a communal dish, don't use your own chopsticks or, if you do, flip your chopsticks around and take the food with the end that you didn't put in your mouth
5. use the chopstick rest when you are not eating
If you're unsure, you can always ask or watch what others are doing!
