My Persuasive Writing
For this assignment you will write a letter to persuade. Follow the instructions carefully and complete this work, step by step. Do not be overwhelmed by the number of steps, as it is really just the planning and the writing of a simple
persuasive letter! Just follow the steps in the given order, and you should have no problems. However, be sure to contact me if you need any help with this work.
The Assignment:
The Town Council of the small town, Anywhere, AB has come to realize that the local βOld Aged Manorβ has great need of volunteers to assist with the physical and emotional health of the elderly. A community group has put forth the proposal that all grade
10 students residing in the town should volunteer four hours of time on alternating Saturdays and Sundays, beginning the first weekend of September and ending the last weekend of June. All people are encouraged to put forth their positions on this proposal
prior to the next Town Council meeting that will be held in the immediate future. Due to limited space of the town office, only written letters will be considered.
Write a letter that will persuade the Anywhere Town Council to either ACCEPT or REJECT the proposal that says "Students Should Volunteer."
Step 1: Review the 4.0 Writing Persuasively Rubric to see
how your work will be evaluated.
Step 2: Review this Persuasive Writing information very carefully and use this information
in your letter writing.
Step 3: Review these examples of some Sample Opinions of Others. You
may use these ideas if you wish, and if you do, please give credit to the person. For example: I agree with Student Fred when he says that weekend volunteering is a bad idea! OR I agree with Mary Student when she says that volunteering
is good for the soul!
Step 4: Brainstorm your ideas and complete this Pro/Con Planning T-Chart. You can then compare your pro and con ideas about volunteering, and this can help you choose your solid position about the proposal. Remember--you will only support one side of the proposal, and not both. This T-Chart will be submitted with
your assignment.
Step 5: Read this Informative Letter Exemplar that gives an example
of letter format as well as persuasive writing tips.
Step 6: Using your T-Chart planning and following the letter exemplar, write your persuasive letter. You will submit both the T-Chart and your polished draft for this assignment.
