5.2 Transformation Narrative

Characters allow us to connect to the film’s theme in a personal way. We empathize with their struggles because we struggle ourselves. We celebrate their victories because we recognize the effort required to overcome obstacles, and the pride that accompanies perseverance. Studying the characters in this way will deepen your understanding of the film.

Characters that are realistic are often dynamic, meaning they undergo a transformation. Like us, the characters in a film might transform their lives in order to improve their quality of life or to open new doors and possibilities.

The Assignment

In the following assignment, you will consider, in detail, the transformation of one of the characters from your chosen film. You must examine and answer the questions below in your assignment:

Before Transformation - What is the character like before the transformation?
Cause of Transformation - Who or what influences the character to change?
During Transformation - How does the character change?
After Transformation - What is the character like after transformation?

Option A

Create a personal narrative for your chosen character told in the first-person. You will record video clips and images from many different facets of the character’s life (do not use images from the film; rather, create or find your own images). Add a voiceover to tell the story and music to set the mood.

Option B

Create social status updates (i.e. similar to what you might find on Facebook or Twitter) for your chosen character. You should have at least one for each of the questions listed above. You must also include an explanatory paragraph for each update to explain what is happening in the film at that point and to explore the transformation your character is undergoing.

Option C

Create an animated presentation to track the transformation of your chosen character and answer the questions listed above. You could use Powtoon, Videoscribe, Screencastomatic, or even just film yourself writing on a whiteboard. You should include a voiceover to explain your animation.

Option D

Create a trailer storyboard for your film showing how your character changed throughout. You should use still shots or short clips from the film. Also include written explanations to explain your selection of images. You could create a slideshow, record a screencast, or use Prezi for your presentation.

Once you have completed your assignment, save it as Your Name 5.2 Transformation Narrative and submit it for assessment.
