Assignment 4: Shopping Trip
For this assignment, you will use your knowledge of nutrition and of how to interpret nutritional information, as presented in Section 4.
This assignment requires you to visit a grocery store and mimic shopping for various sport nutrition situations. For each situation, you are to find and take pictures of a product that is a 'good choice' and a product that is a 'bad choice'. Then, you will provide a reasoning that compares and contrasts the products of each category. You will design a presentation in the form of a PowerPoint, video, or a Prezi. Your presentation expects you do do the following:
- Provide a title page that includes your name and a picture of you in front of the grocery store of your choice.
- Select any five of the following situations to use in your presentation:
A. It is 9 a.m. and you have not eaten today. The competition time is at 1 p.m.
B. It is 2:30 p.m., and you have a game starting at 3 p.m.
C. You have a five-minute break during your game, and you are feeling hungry.
D. It is 15 minutes after your game ended.
E. It is 6:30 p.m., one hour after your competition ended.
F. You are practising for an hour and a half, and you know that you will need to stay hydrated.
G. You want to incorporate more protein into your diet.
H. It is 2 p.m., and you just finished one part of your game or competition; the next one starts in 45 minutes. You might have 3 more games or competitions today, and you will not get to the grocery store again.
Select one 'nutritionally sound' product and one 'poor nutrition choice' product for each category that you have chosen. Provide a reasoning or explanation that compares and contrasts the suitability of the products for the situation. Each of the five situations must include the following:
-
- A picture of the products side by side
- A picture of the Nutrition Facts table for each product
- Reasoning or explanation of why one product is a better choice than the other product is. Include information that pertains to the needs of athletes and how the products either meet or do not meet those needs. Be sure to compare your presentation to the marking guide prior to submitting.
- Compare your presentation to the MARKING GUIDE to ensure that you have met all the requirements of the assignment!
Notes:
- You are not allowed to use the same product more than once.
- When you are selecting products to compare, you must choose similar products. (For example: you cannot compare a protein bar to a pizza.)
- Bonus marks will be given to students who can find items that the general public might think are 'healthy' that are, in fact, bad for athletes OR items that the general public might think are 'unhealthy' but, perhaps, are good for athletes
in certain situations.
