Unit 2 Using Electricity and Magnetism Pre-Assessment
Pre-Assesment

Using Electricity and Magnetism
A city is never more beautiful than when it is lit with thousands of lights at night. You might have difficulty believing that only 120 years ago electric lights were not available. Before electricity, people had to burn oil, wood, candles, or even whale oil in lamps. Now, we are fortunate to be able to flip switches and have light instantly.

What would our lives be like without electricity? Imagine what your morning breakfast would be like. Without electricity, you could not plug in your toaster to make toast or your kettle to boil water. Do you like to blend a smoothie for breakfast? Not without electricity! What about a nice cold glass of juice or milk? That's too badโyour refrigerator needs electricity, too. You may know that you need to plug these appliances in to access electricity. By understanding how electricity works, we can appreciate better what it does for us everyday.
- You may know that lightning is an example of electricity, but did you know that electricity is electrons that move from atom to atom?
- You may know that some objects like iron can act as magnets to attract one another, but, did you know electricity and magnetism are related?
- Finally, did you know using electricity incorrectly could kill you?
Ask Yourself
What do I already know about electricity and magnetism?
Four Corners: What Do I Know?
Look at the four corners in the Notebook download, and in each corner, write something to answer the question.
If you cannot answer these questions, do not worry! At the end of this unit, you will be asked to return to these four corners to write what you have learned.
