Should globalization shape identity?

The Social 10 course is centered around the main concept of Globalization. To begin this review, it is important to understand that individuals and groups of people express their identities in various ways.  With today’s connected world people are exposed to other groups, cultures, ideas, belief systems and world views.  Consequently, every individual must respond to the effects of globalization in a way that best defines his or her identity. Within this lesson students will…

- Explore ways in which individuals and collectives express identities (traditions, language, religion, spirituality, the arts, attire, relationship to land, ideological beliefs, role modeling)
- Acknowledge the importance of multiple perspectives in a variety of situations
- Identify the various ways that people in Canada express their identities
- Explore why people promote their culture and examine how globalization has shaped  identities and cultures
- Analyze cultural communication in a globalized society.

Globalization has made an impact on different identities throughout the world and cultural groups are responding in one way or another to the pressures that they face. The focus of this issue is on the challenges that are associated with globalization and cultural identity.
