4. Conclusion

Of the many socialist movements that developed from Marxism, none was more successful than the communist movement in Russia.  Inspired by Marxist ideas regarding the revolution of the working class and the development of a command society, activists such as Joseph Stalin and other activists worked to overthrow the czarist government.  Upon the death of Vladimir Lenin, Stalin increased state control as the government became increasingly powerful, harsh and oppressive.
