The Colossus of Rhodes was erected on a white marble pedestal. This impressive steel and bronze structure stood more than 30 m tall and guarded the harbour of the Greek island of Rhodes. It is estimated the statue was completed in 280 BCE and it is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The size of this statue was comparable to the present-day Statue of Liberty in New York City’s harbour. The Colossus of Rhodes stood for only 56 years because it was destroyed in an earthquake.
The colossus was commemorated on this Hungarian stamp in 1980.
The Module 5 Project is all about constructing a three-dimensional model, but certainly not to the scale of the Colossus of Rhodes!
In Section 1 you will explore representing three-dimensional objects using two-dimensional drawings, including views from the front, side, and top and sketches on isometric dot paper.
Section 2 involves perspective and scale. Solutions to problems involving scale diagrams and models will include proportional reasoning. You will also create, to scale, three-dimensional models.
In Section 3 you will investigate exploded-view diagrams. These diagrams may help you assemble the Module 5 Project model.
In this module you will investigate the following question:
- How is 3-D object design represented in multiple ways with and without the use of scale?
