UNIT 2

ADDICTION
Addiction happens when your body has a psychological or physiological need for a substance.
Substance abuse means that you are using a substance frequently, but do not have the same need for it that you do in addiction. Substance abuse can have many negative consequences. It can isolate you from friends and family, and it can affect your grades.
Some substances are more addictive than others. Nicotine, crystal meth, and heroin are examples of highly addictive substances. However, this does not mean you cannot become addicted to substances such as marijuana. By experimenting with any type of drug,
you risk becoming addicted.
If you or someone you know is dealing with addiction, call the Alberta 24-hour hotline at 1-866-332-2322.
