MEET YOUR BRAIN

Be good to your brain. It's in charge of keeping you alive. It grows from the bottom up, and from the inside out.

Your heart beat, breathing, and blood pressure are all regulated at the bottom of your brain. In the middle, we have the emotional centre of the brain (basic instincts: sex drive, need to belong, and aggression). The top and the outside of the brain is the cognitive centre. Emotional development comes first and emotional control develops as you age. Try reasoning with a two year old who is sucking on your T.V. remote control. Expect tears and an excessive amount of "Mine! Mine! Mine!" instead of a thoughtful debate on ownership. Why? Their brains just haven't developed in those areas yet.

At the bottom and back of your brain is the cerebellum. Your cerebellum controls not only the balance and agility of your body, but also the agility and responsiveness of your brain. Your cerebellum allows your brain to function like a super computer. The limbic system is the emotional centre at the middle of your brain. The limbic system is critical to long-term memory. Experiences that are emotionally charged tend to be remembered over the long term. The part that joins the halves of your brain is called the corpus callosum, and it helps you process complicated information. It is also important to problem solving and creativity.

"What were you thinking?" You've heard adults ask this question before, perhaps in response to a bad decision you've made. Your frontal lobes (top and front of the brain) are responsible for controlling your impulses and your ability to make decisions. Guess what? This area is one of the last to develop in your brain. The frontal lobes continue to develop into your twenties. We didn't know this until just recently. Score one point for modern medicine.

Because your brain continues to develop right into adulthood, it's important that you keep learning and flexing that brain!
