Unit 1

Just the Facts

"Better to see something once, than to hear about it a thousand times." ~ Asian Proverb

People are attracted to various travel destinations for different reasons: to see something, to escape from something, to understand someplace, or to participate in something. One of the key factors in tourism decision making is the tourist attraction.

A tourism buzz term today is that tourists want an experience. But remember, attractions can only provide the opportunity for an experience. Every tourist is different with their own past and expectations. With proper knowledge, the attraction, however, has the opportunity to increase the possibility of a positive experience.

So how do tourists choose where exactly they will go when they literally, have the world at their disposal?

Throughout the four lessons within this unit, you will learn the definitions and roles of attractions, special events, festivals, and travel generators in relation to tourist attractions.
