Introduction

In this section of the course, you will address the modern drama component of your studies. As you already know, we have four essential questions that we are reflecting upon in our study of texts in this course:

  1. What influence do others have on who we become?
  2. How important is it to pursue our passions?
  3. What drives our need to belong?
  4. What does it mean to "live well"?

In all likelihood, you will be able to relate to the play, The Shape of a Girl by Joan MacLeod, in some way. The play focuses on a young girl, Braidie, who reflects upon her school years and realizes she has played a part in the bullying of one of her friends. Regardless of the context of this play, many people have seen or experienced bullying at some point in their lives. Here you get the opportunity to listen not to the victim, but to the confessions of a bystander who struggles to determine her next step.

Your assignments will prompt you to reflect on your own views and Braidie's monologue as a basis for the creative work you will complete.
