Annotated Reading of Novel Tutorial

Annotated Reading of the Novel Tutorial
Once you have selected the novel you intend to study, your first task is to begin reading. Your study of the novel will be quite detailed. By following the reading plan we have provided, you will save yourself a lot of time.
In this module, you will annotate while you read, using sticky notes. To complete this annotation, you will need four different colours of small sticky notes (the ones that are approximately the width of a finger) and one set of larger square sticky notes.
As you read, you will identify sections that develop by colour coding them with the small sticky notes. To help you get started, record a colour for each essential question below based on the four sticky note tabs that you have in your notebook.

Note: You can colour code each essential question as you see fit. The key is to use the same coloured sticky note for the same essential question through the entire novel. For example, you might tag all details related to belonging with a blue sticky note throughout the novel. When you complete assignments related to belonging (essential question #2, above), you can find details easily, because they are all tagged with the same blue coloured sticky notes.
At the end of each chapter, you will summarize the chapter in a sentence or two, and identify a key quotation and its page number. Use the larger sticky notes when you summarize each chapter in a sentence or two. In your summary identify a key quotation and its page number for quick reference in doing your assignments.
By flagging information in this way, you can scan your novel easily for information. You can quickly find information using your chapter summaries, or find key details relating to the essential questions listed above. Being able to scan your novel quickly will save time on later assignments.
