Lesson 9: HSMS Program Administration

Element eight, Health and Safety Management System Program Administration, ensures that all parts of a health and safety management system are properly documented and communicated to employees.  Records help to ensure that the program is effective in reducing the risk of injury and ill health at the workplace.

Keeping records is critical in monitoring the effectiveness of the health and safety system.  Examples of records,  that should be maintained, are:

  • employee orientation and training records
  • hazard assessment records
  • work site inspection records (Lesson 5)
  • incident investigation reports (Lesson 8)
  • maintenance records
  • Emergency Response Plan (Lesson 7)
  • meeting minutes where health and safety was discussed
  • first aid records
