Lesson 13 β€” Activity 1: Writing a Movie Review

You have been working on developing skills for writing sentences and paragraphs. Those writing skills can be used for many other purposes, too.

In this activity, you are going to watch a film called Freedom Writers about how writing can change people’s lives. (You may also choose another film approved by your teacher.) After viewing the movie, you will use your writing skills to create a movie review.

Freedom Writers is a movie based on a true story. It tells about a new teacher in a school where there is a lot of racial tension and violence. In the movie, the teacher is able to make a connection with her students. She reads them The Diary of Anne Frank and then asks the students to write about their own feelings of persecution and injustice.

A movie review will help you decide if you want to see a film.

In order to write a review, you need to be sure you know what the elements of a movie review are.

A movie review is:

  •  a way of sharing your opinion about a movie with others. It is written in a more formal way than just talking with friends and saying that you did or did not like a movie.
  •  a format that allows you to give the reader enough information about the movie to make an informed decision about whether or not he or she would enjoy watching, renting, or buying it. (But doesn’t give away too many details to spoil the story of the movie altogether.)

In order to create a movie review, you must, of course, watch the film! You may need to watch it more than once in order to write a good review.

You should also take notes while watching in order to remember important details.

A movie review contains several paragraphs. It contains information about the story, who the main characters are, and where and when the story takes place.

It often talks about the actors and the quality of their acting. It may also talk about some of the other elements of the movie such as the music and the cinematography (the way the movie looks).

Finally, the reviewer can tell the reader what was learned from the movie and his or her opinion of it. There may also be a rating given. Often, reviewers give movie ratings based on stars.

Ratings for a Movie

Remember!
In a movie review, you share your opinion about the movie with your reader. You have to support your opinion so the reader can make a decision about whether or not to agree with you. If you just say you like a movie or do not like a movie but don’t explain why, you really haven’t given the reader enough information to make a decision.

Now, enjoy the show!
