Using a Ready-Made Pattern

The Pattern

If using a ready-made pattern for the home or personal accessory, be sure to take accurate and proper measurements.

It might be necessary to have body measurements for the personal accessory. If so, review Measuring Your Body in the Ready, Set, Sew! Student Learning Guide before determining your figure type and pattern size. Measure your head circumference if you are making a hat. Measure your feet for slippers, and measure your hands for mitts.

If making a home decorating accessory you will require other measurements:

  • Simple curtains will require window measurements both lengthwise and crosswise. Decisions must be made as to where the curtain will sit in relation to the window and how deep hems and casings will be. Amount of fullness is also a major factor in determining how much fabric to purchase

  • Pillows should harmonize in shape to the bed or couch where they will be placed. Make decisions about openings and include detail.

  • Bedcovers are varied. A bedspread covers the bed with extra length to tuck under the pillow. It can end at the floor or be paired with a dust ruffle. A comforter is similar, but shorter, extending 10 to 15 cm below the mattress. A duvet cover is like a pillow case to enclose a warm down-filled blanket. Mattresses are available in different sizes; therefore, careful measurements are required for all bedcovers.

  • Placemats, tablecloths, and napkins must fit and complement the table size and shape. Experiment with newspaper to determine size.
  • Chair cushions must fit the seat of the chair. Use the old chair cover as a template to make the new pattern.
  • Wall hangings must harmonize with the wall shape and coordinate with other room accessories.

The ready-made pattern will provide important information on the pattern envelope and the guide sheet. Read this important information noting.
