Layout of Pattern

A large surface is required for laying out a pattern and fabric. Consider the width and appearance.
  • If the fabric has a design which is regularly repeated this requires matching the design at the seams, and making sure the design is placed attractively on pattern pieces.
  • If the fabric has a shine or nap, lay all pattern pieces one way.
  • If the fabric has a stretch, make sure the stretch is in the correct direction when laying pattern to fabric.

Observe all place-on-fold symbols and lay the pattern so the straight-of-grain line is on a lengthwise thread or parallel to the selvage.

Do not begin cutting until all pattern pieces are in place. Always double check the layout.
