Underlining
Completion requirements
Underlining
Underlining is not the same as lining. Although both lining and underling add stability to the fabric, they differ in how this is accomplished.
Underling is adding a fabric to the fashion fabric for structure. Underling is a separate layer of fabric attached to the wrong side of the fashion fabric and the two are treated as one fabric for the construction of the garment or accessory.
Care requirements of the underlining must be similar to the decorator fabric as both will be cleaned together.
Standards for Evaluating Lining and Fusible Fabrics
- The underlining must fit smoothly.
- The underlining provides a neat, clean finish.
- The underlining complements the other fabric.
