An accessory is something which adds that "finishing touch." In clothing, an accessory might be a belt, purse, tie, scarf, hat, jewellery, or hair accessory. In home decorating, an accessory might be placemats and napkins, pillows, simple curtains; or window shades, a tablecloth, exercise mat, duffle bag, or wall hanging.
Your project might use a ready-made pattern from one of the pattern companies such as McCalls, Butterick, Simplicity, or Vogue; or it might be a project taken from a magazine requiring an enlargement of a drawing and making a pattern.
You might decide to draft your own pattern. If you do, draft the pattern and then determine step-by-step instructions before you start cutting and sewing. Make a trial project using cheap fabric or an old sheet.

The home sewer can be very creative. There are numerous patterns, fabrics, styles, and notions available. The chosen combination allows the home sewer to express personal style in coordinating the accessory with a wardrobe or home décor.
It is important that you choose a pattern appropriate to the level of your sewing skill, time, and patience.
