Protein Powders
Myth: Athletes who are weight lifting to gain muscle mass must take protein powder supplements.
Protein supplements (protein powders, protein bars) are used by athletes
to increase the amount of protein they are consuming.
This type of supplement is recommended primarily for people who need more calories in their diets. The benefit is usually from the extra calories and not the protein itself. Although an adequate intake of protein is necessary for muscle growth and repair, athletes should focus on eating whole food first to meet their caloric needs. The standard North American diet typically contains more than enough grams of protein to meet needs, even with increased training.
Unfortunately, protein powders are not regulated, which means that they might include inconsistent ingredients or banned substances. If you choose to purchase a protein powder, be sure to look for a product that is low in carbs and sugar.
