Imperialism and World Tension

The New Imperialism caused great tensions throughout the world. As each major nation tried to strengthen its power over its territories, other nations grew nervous about what that power could do. European nations formed alliances with other nations for defensive purposes. By the early 1900s, 85% of the world was controlled by European nations.

Imperialism and World War

The tensions caused by imperialism are considered an underlying cause of World War I. The tensions between alliances for power and territory eventually led to armed conflict in which almost every area of the world was involved. Eventually, the negative effects of imperialism were recognized internationally, and the world began to follow a practice of self-determination for all people.

Keep in mind that sources present an author or artist's perspective on an issue and they might be different than your own. However, you need to understand and explain the perspective found in the source.

This assignment will introduce you to the Three Source Analysis written response found on your exams both in this course and in the diploma exams at the end of Grade Twelve.
