Wood or plastic is placed at the position on the handle where a person grips the ladle. Metal is a good heat conductor, but wood and plastic are insulators. Using an insulator on the handle prevents a person's hand from touching the hot metal ladle while serving hot soup.
Thermal energy radiates from peopleβs bodies. The silver-coloured material of an emergency blanket reflects body heat radiation back towards the person's body. In this way, the emergency blanket traps heat around a person, keeping him or her warm.
The wool of the knitted tea cozy is an insulator. The tea cozy slows heat transfer from the teapot to the surrounding air. This keeps hot tea warm for longer.
Convection transfers heat to all the water in the kettle. Water at the bottom of the kettle is heated by conduction from the stove element. This heated water rises in the kettle and cooler water at the top of the kettle sinks. A convection current is produced in the kettle, which heats all the water quickly. This is true of electric kettles, also, which have a small internal heating element at the bottom.
Shade feels cooler on a hot sunny day because you are exposed to less radiant energy from the Sun. This means less heat is transferred by radiation from the Sun to your body.
