Unit 2: Section 2: Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms
Section 2 Summary
In Section 2, you answered this question: What is the impact of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms on individual rights?
The Charter of Rights and Freedoms ensures that everyone in Canada has fundamental freedoms and rights. The Charter is part of our constitution and is based on Canadian laws and shared values. When confronted with a challenge, the Charter provides Canadians with the laws to ensure that Canada is a free and democratic society.
Governor General Michaëlle Jean stated,
"I am a Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong, or free to choose those who shall govern my country. This heritage of freedom I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind."
Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean: Speech on the Occasion of the 60th Anniversary of Canadian Citizenship http://www.gg.ca/document.aspx?id=12377>, Governor General of Canada, 2007. Reproduced with the permission of the Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada, 2009.
You will continue to use your understanding of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms as it impacts your identity, quality of life, and citizenship. You will examine how Canada ensures the rights and freedoms of all Canadians as you explore collective rights and immigration in Unit 3.
