Mechanical and chemical digestion both occur in the stomach. Mechanical digestion occurs when the stomach muscles physically squeeze and churn food into smaller pieces. Chemical digestion occurs when stomach acid and digestive enzymes break
down food into smaller pieces.
The diaphragm changes air pressure in the lungs. When the diaphragm moves downward, the volume of the chest increases. This reduces pressure in the lungs and causes air to move into the lungs. When the diaphragm relaxes upward, the volume of
the chest decreases. This increases pressure in the lungs and causes air to move out of the lungs.
The heart muscle strongly contracts to pump blood to all parts of the body. The heart muscle is constantly moving. It needs lots of oxygen and nutrients so that the muscle cells can produce energy and keep moving.
The body can function without one kidney, but it cannot function without both kidneys. Kidneys filter wastes out of the blood and regulate water balance in the body. With any kidneys, wastes build up in the blood, which causes body cells to
die.
Sensory receptors on the legs sense the movement of the catβs soft fur against the skin. The sensory neurons send a message of this sensation from the skin receptors to the spinal cord. The message transfers through the spinal cord neurons to
the brain. The brain processes the message, and sends a signal back through the spinal cord to motor neurons in the neck. The motor neurons cause the neck muscles to tilt the neck down so the woman can see the cat.
