An apple peeler contains a wedge as the peeling blade. The sharp wedge applies force to the apple peel, cutting it. The peeling blade is attached to a wheel and axle crankshaft that holds the apple. Turning the wheel and axle spins the apple
around the peeling blade wedge, easily cutting the peel off the apple.
You likely use a car or truck for transportation. Without this machine, you would not be able to travel to distant places very quickly. You would have to use a slower form of transportation like a bicycle, horse, or walking. Travelling would
be colder in the winter without a heated vehicle. Because travelling would be slower, you would probably stay closer to home.
Stairs are an inclined plane, which is a simple machine. Stairs make it easier for your body to climb upwards, compared to climbing straight up on a ladder. You only need to use your legs to climb stairs, while you need to use both your arms
and legs to climb a ladder.
Before electricity, machines needed to be powered by another source. This was often human or animal motion, although some machines were powered by water and wind. Electricity provides a constant source of energy that replaces the effort of humans.
Pruning shears contain two wedges as the clipping blades, and two Class 1 levers that are connected at the fulcrum. The blade wedges help humans apply more force to cut into stiff branches. The levers help apply a greater amount of force to
the blades. The fulcrum of the pruning shears is close to the blades. This means a gardener has to move the levers a longer distance, but they produce a greater force on the blades.
