  3. COMPARE your answers with the suggested "Self-Check Quiz Answers" below. WAIT! You didn't skip step 2, did you? It's very important to carefully write out your own answers before checking the suggested answers.

  4. REVISE your quiz answers if you need to. If you answered all the questions correctly, you can skip this step. Revise means to change, fix, and add extra notes if you need to. People evaluate machines in order to buy a machine that meets their needs. Examining all the features and impacts of a machine helps people make good purchasing decisions.
Steam-powered trains moved people and products between locations much faster and easier than in the past. The steam train connected people in distant places more easily. The steam train reduced the work of humans and animals in moving products.

Steam-powered trains burned coal, which is a fossil fuel. Burning fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide gas. Extra carbon dioxide in the atmosphere contributed to climate change, which has negative effects on the environment.
There are several new technologies that have recently been introduced into society.

Drones are an example of a new technology. Drones are flying machines that don’t need a pilot. Drones can carry out many tasks. For example, people are starting to experiment with using drones to transport packages. Drones can collect images from the air, to provide information about the land.

Robots are another example of a new technology. Robots are machines that do work without a human controlling the machine. Robots can do work that is dangerous for humans to do, like search and rescue. Robots can also do precise, difficult work such as surgery.
Improvements to existing machine designs can make machines do work more efficiently. Humans develop new machines to have less impact on the environment. Sometimes people invent new materials, which can be used in improving machines. People often invent new machines to reduce the effort involved in completing a task.
