Humans indirectly use water in the production of necessities and modern comforts. We use water in agriculture, to grow plants that we eat and use to make clothing. Animals raised for meat require water too. Water is used in many industrial processes, such as making paper, generating electricity, and mining metals.
Some benefits of building dams are that they generate electricity and they store water for agriculture in dry climates. A disadvantage of building dams is that they flood large areas of land, which changes both land and aquatic ecosystems.
Agriculture is one industry in Alberta that uses water. Agriculture uses water to keep both crops and livestock alive. The oil sands is another industry in Alberta that uses water. Oil sands extraction uses water to separate bitumen from sand.
People in developed countries like Canada and the United States use more water because water is used to provide many modern comforts. These include nuclear and hydroelectricity generation, manufactured products such as paper, and fossil fuel extraction.
River water is the source of drinking water for many urban communities. It is important for the water upstream to be tested and monitored frequently to ensure it is safe for human use, before it enters the community.
