Unit Seven Overview

To what extent should globalization shape identity?

How does globalization influence us? You have explored how globalization has affected our history, the way we earn our living, and the environment. But how does it affect us as people? Does it shape the way we live, what we value, and what we believe? Does it affect our ways of life?

Globalization and individuals: The first unit considered how globalization influences individuals. You know that you have a unique identity as an individual and as a member of a culture and community. In the past, cultures often were isolated, but today they are more interconnected. Today, each person on earth is not only a member of a unique cultural group but also a resident of the global village.

We are connected to each other in many ways, much like people who live in a village. Does that mean we are all becoming more alike?

This unit guides your exploration of the effect of globalization on the identity of individuals as members of specific cultures.

In this unit, you will consider the following questions:

  • Are people becoming more alike because of globalization?

  • How does globalization affect language and culture?

Reflect

Does globalization add to identity, making people richer by expanding their understanding of other people and other ways of thinking and living? Or does it take away from uniqueness by encouraging all people of the world to be the same? Should we make an effort to preserve the languages and cultures that have been passed from our ancestors, or should we embrace the changes that come from our increased connections with other people?
